💯 right. Especially the 2nd part abt the need to make migration easier, not harder. I wrote about it in the NYT during Trump1 to clear my name after getting criminally charged thanks to Denmark's insane anti-immigration policy (my crime was giving an invited lecture on my research to Parliament).

To give you a practical example:

My workplace has just announced that the introduction of the levy on foreign students adds a £12M burden on our costs.

Fewer overseas students coming in are going to REDUCE that income to the country. How is that good?

It really feels like shooting oneself ...

There's a very simple solution. Process asylum applications fast, starting from giving applicants a voucher for transit on any one of the legal ferries across the channel.
