I have a couple of peripheral mentions in Wikipedia, both are annoyingly wrong but I can’t be bothered trying to correct them, so anecdotally I suspect you might be right.

I always thought it was a portmanteau between tamago ( egg ) and tomodachi ( friend ).

I don’t see the point in conversing with people you’d normally cross the street to avoid, just because the medium is social media rather than real life.

I find it really irritating when people set themselves up as curators of history, but set about it badly. I used to write computer games and you see it in that area all the time.
