Hello New Followers! I guess I should do an intro thread!

We are Pirate Artisans, a married couple of landlocked pirates sailing out of the Midwest to bring our fine handmade treasures to any manner of convention and festival that will have us! Our favorite materials are bronze, glass, and silver!
a crow skull made out of bronze, with a leather cord, sitting on a rock, with the background slightly out of focus A bright yellow, round citrine gemstone set in a smooth silver setting shaped like a cup, mounted on a black mannequin ear display A wooden merchant cart stylized in the fashion of an old pirate ship, with a gilded wheel on the left hand side and carved legs on the right, purple and walnut horizontal boards, and a cedar roof three feet above the surface of the cart. On the roof are a foremast and a mainmast. he foremast hangs out over the front of the cart and features a jolly roger with a jawless human skull and a file and hammer crossed, like swords. The mainmast sticks up from the center of the gable of the roof and has black sails, billowing in the wind. The car is eight feet wide, but only four feet of that is the body of the cart. Two foot extensions are attached to either end, from which hang red bannders, and above which, connected to the cedar roof, are awnings with hellow undersides and gold fringe.

On and about the cart are a variety of objects for sale, mostly on wooden displays which are propped up in the back at an angle, and filled with small boxes. Earrings and pendants fill these. There is a small shelf protruding from the front of the cart, and that is filled with colorful silk flowers and small, colorful boxes. From the front rafter, directly below the roof, there are metal and glass animal skull pendants, hanging from their leather cords behind signs which tell you what animal skull they are, and how much they cost, though the letters are too small to make out in this picture.

Behind the table, leaning forward onto crates that support the displays, is a large, bearded man in a large pirate hat which is wreathed in large golden tassels and topped with a plumage of yellow and brown feathers. His expression is inquisitive and inviting.

This cart is outdoors, in late fall. There is a castle structure to the left, and trees and fences behind it. A small silver pendant featuring a motif of three hounds chasing each other, their legs intertwined in a celtic knot. In the center of the pendant is a grey and blue stone in a cupped setting. It is on a leather cord and resting upon dense green moss.

Yesterday was my 40th birthday! Much to my preference, I spent it in the company of good friends, having fine food and the most beautiful cake I've ever had for a birthday.

Thank you! Mixing glass is so much fun. She has a deeper green glass that glitters in the light!

While we're talking ergonomics, the single best investment I've ever made has been this stereo microscope. It allows me to work with my hands at a good height without bending my neck or straining my eyes, and I can get far more intricate than I could with a traditional magnifying visor.
pirateartisans.bsky.social
I used to do this with a sewing needle, but it was very painful and bad, ergonomically. So I've since switched to a carefully sharpened Tailor's awl, which offers a better grip and an angled point.

I am, admittedly, not much one for sketching, I tend to work freehand, as my skills are in sculpting, not drawing. But when I DO need to transfer a drawn design, this is the most tedious part. To transfer the whole design, you make lines with tiny holes through the design into the carving wax.

I know some cons already let folks vote on theme with charity donations, but I really think it would amp up the interest to make it the top two winners. And that sort of chaos really inspires some fun creative endeavors!

Free idea, do what you want with it :3
pirateartisans.bsky.social
Tossing this out there onto the ether, but I really think more cons should do mashup themes. It's way more interesting to see like, Jurassic Beach Vacation or Cyberpunk Pirates than any of those themes individually, to me. Let attendees vote and just moosh up the top two, get weird with it!

"Yo where'd you cop that fit? That's low-key drippy as fuck"

Thank you, teenagers at the gas station. That may be the nicest thing a teenager has ever said to me. I think. Good to know my brand of weird is impressive to the youth!

The drip in question:

She was still parked there and nowhere in sight when we pulled out, I hope a Frito Lay truck rammed her out of the way honestly

Thank you! I looked up at the lantern in the cart and went "oh perfect"

As always, I carve all my originals in wax, and this was one of the most intricate & delicate objects I have ever attempted! The fine lines of the carving, the tiny details of the dragons chest, even the leaf and stem were so fun to carve, I really love being able to make stuff like this for events!

We've been so busy with Ren Fest I forgot to share the super sponsor swag we did for @tailsandtornadoes.org this year! I was given a lot of creative freedom, and given the spooky theme, I leapt at the chance to make a jack o lantern pendant featuring both of the con mascots!

We were at a jam-packed turnpike station on Friday and a lady pulled up behind us at the pump, blocking half the traffic, and then parked??? And went inside??? MA'AM

My experience has -and this is entirely anecdotal and subjective- been that it's especially boomers and Gen xers who REALLY go all in, I think bc they have the money for a printer farm or four big fancy lasers, and there's something that really grates about the specific smugness of those folks.
pirateartisans.bsky.social
No no I get it 100%. Part of the point of my thread was that there is no real way to draw the lines, it's just a box that is opened that we can't shut anymore, unfortunately. And for every person who gives up, six more think they invented the idea of selling flexi dragons and take their place >.>
pirateartisans.bsky.social
And not everyone is! I think some people want the feeling of being one without any of the actual work, which isn't necessarily bad, but a lot of folks go "I made this" and
... no someone else designed it and a printer made it. That's cool but it's not the same!

I use my Ender 3 Pro extensively at home, it is indispensable for making functional items and organization as a maker, especially as a jeweler, where I'm always in need of custom storage or strange objects for specific use cases.

But I'd gladly trade it to never see another flexi dragon again 🤣

Haha! Once upon a time I did think about doing fancy metal pokeballs set with gems like that! Way back when we were just starting in anime cons, before I realized I didn't like selling fanart. Maybe as a showpiece, though... 🤔
