Interesting. For whatever it's worth, SFF author Gene Wolfe used the word 'fuligin'- a color darker than black, lightless and light-absorbing. At the time, I guessed he'd made it up, but Wolfe enjoyed employing disused words, terms. This apparently from 'fuliginous', meaning 'sooty, smoky'
