The pink layer is called "Belt of Venus" and the dark layer underneath it, near the horizon, is actually the Earth's shadow.

But if you look at the simulation, you'll notice that all virtual particles have the same length or time of existence and this is clearly in contradiction with the idea of random fluctuations of energy.
So the simulation only illustrates the QM principle that empty space is not empty.

Near the Planck scale, space and time are thought to loose their classical meaning due to the Heisenberg principle. One idea behind the simulation was to show the "graininess" of space-time at submicroscopic scale, and then you could say that the diameter of the virtual particles equals ℓP.
