What determines lawful self defense is the response relative to the action, issue with knives is that you have to get close and to kill someone with it usually takes quite a bit of work to a point that leaves self defense, whereas a firearm is fairly often lethal and can be done while moving away.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
