Using the word “conservative” nowadays is confusing. Do you mean the GOP/MAGA? If so that’s not conservative of anything any more. Actual conservatives are politically homeless at the moment IMO

Ok but you’re a writer married to a writer and your name is Wright! I think even my abysmal memory could have managed that 😉

A modest proposal: whenever we cancel media in protest, do sign up for something else more deserving. ACLU? @boltsmag.org? Other ideas?

He’s actually from the Palisades itself. I’d call it commiseration more than compassion. He remained professional throughout but his posts on his own account were hard to watch with dry eyes, as a former palisadian myself.

Apologies. I just had originally thought it was interesting that a significant number of advanced countries have decided to stop doing it. And I thought it weird to be attacked for bringing it up (then, not now).

Yes that’s a difference. Kids have free dental care here. But I raised two kids here without a cavity between them. Silly me for thinking maybe we could ask ourselves why many developed countries have stopped doing it.

AFAIK we don’t have other fluoride sources, toothpaste is supposed to be enough. But just bringing up the idea is thought of as an act of aggression nowadays

My reasoning was to suggest that not everything is a five alarm fire and maybe just maybe sensible countries have decided fluoridation isn’t needed in the water. As an American abroad I’ve had to learn that there are other alternatives to the received wisdom in the US.

I just felt it was food for thought. Sometimes we melt down over stuff that maybe is worth discussing?
May 26, 2025 at 12:39 PM
Totally. When I dared to mention that there are many countries in Europe, including my own, who do not fluoridate their water, I was called a liar and then threatened with being reported for abuse when I said it was not a lie. I mean, just google it?

Yes but the term Scots-Irish is very common in the US, since I doubt many people there have a clue about Ulster or how it came to be full of Protestants.

Can only speak for where I live, in the Netherlands. It’s been the case for the last year or two that only high risk groups and those over sixty were eligible for Covid boosters. So I don’t think we’ll have a problem with it.

Yep. Cared for my 93 year old mom and it was exhausting. But my dad didn’t make it past 50 so there’s that

And yet when Michelle Obama tried to make school lunches healthier, that was communism

Given that they are forbidden in the EU due to failing to meet our safety standards, probably quite a lot.

Bamboo is often tainted with formaldehyde. I bought silicone replacements and am standing by to see what’s wrong with that choice

My high school was stuck half-built for several years until they managed to pass a 2nd bond measure to finish it, bc inflation during the build meant the first bond wasn’t enough any more. Good times!

Ha someone old enough to remember! I had one of those buttons as a kid. And then the wags said to turn it upside down so it stood for No Immediate Miracles

I hope so!

Why is this impossible to find in the app? I was searching for coverage and couldn’t find it even with a search on hands off. Should be lead story.

By tradition, or by the constitution?

Hand counts are awful, slow, error-ridden and just as prone to tampering if not more so. Paper ballots only disenfranchises swathes of people, including me living abroad.
