Until they face a genuine, undeniable election whiteout, they’re just going to continue doubling down. But it’s likely the system is so rigged and the disinfo machines are so effective that they’ll never face a political reckoning. I hope I’m wrong, but there’s been a real absence of consequence.

Yet Trump ran arguable the darkest, most chaotic, and all-round terrible campaigns in history. The asymmetry that one side needs to be flawless in order to defeat an openly authoritarian train-wreck of a candidate kinda indicates the country is already a lost cause.

Suddenly he could make the case “hey remember how much better things were, before I fucked up the *one* major global crisis I faced?”. Never mind so much of the political capital Biden had to spend was on cleaning up Trump’s mess, and the post-COVID supply chain issues driving inflation.

The greatest trick Trump ever pulled was convincing that the public that the economic and social devastation from COVID was inevitable and that things would have been no different regardless of who was in charge. He was effectively given a mulligan despite so much of the harm being self-inflicted.

Isn’t Catholicism the *opposite* of Pelagianism? As someone from a long line of Irish Catholics, the vibe was always “no matter how hard you try you’ll always be a fuckup, so better start begging for forgiveness early and often”. Big part of why even non-believers like myself harbor quite a complex.

His memories/understandings of the military seem limited to recruit training. But the high grooming/fitness/attention to detail requirements are specific to that unique environment, which critically is a short period with clear goals and outcomes. Nobody wants to live like that indefinitely.

It’s the fundamental issue with modern media. They cover stories that sell, that they can keep digging at, pulling layers back. It’s why you get a million stories on Biden’s age, but not Trump’s. And why the Epstein story is doing real damage to Trump, it’s got legs, intrigue, ongoing drama.

I think also the media knows they can make a story out of a Democrat saying something ignorant and offensive. There’s drama to it, some Dems will call them out, some will defend, you might get an apology, but you know, drama. The GOP will unify in attacking the media, which makes for a boring story.
