And even then, there are still use cases for a ship like that (a larger air defense platform, tube artillery support for an amphibious invasion). It’s just nobody has needed those capabilities in a while.

Like, getting rid of the filibuster is absolutely short-term bad for Dems. It's not hard to believe that it's *long-term* bad for Dems too, given that the GOP should be in control of the Senate like 70% of the time.
I agree w/ getting rid of it, but its a closer calculation than people credit

A more charitable reading is that the filibuster is the one power that the minority has while in the minority, and they want to keep the one lever they have while they're in the minority.

If Star Trek is generally a hyper-idealized version of mid-to-late 20th century America, putting ENT at a point where they represent a younger, scrappier early 20th century America makes a ton of sense

It’s also of a piece with Enterprise’s broader theme of “Archer is flying without a net in a way Kirk or Picard isn’t, he’s going to fuck things up and this build the net that his descendants will have.”

Making the Earth Romulan War a WW1 story and not a WW2 story was a central thematic goal of mine, both from a “where this is in the timeline” perspective and from a “this isn’t the kind of war story I as an American have read a ton of” perspective

Yes, that is very much what I’m going for! No one knows how to fight a war like this (or even if they *can* fight a war like this with the tech they have) and everyone is in way over their heads.
It’s only gonna get worse on that score from here!

One of the things I will always remember from my Naval War College class last year was a story a black Navy LT told us where his uncle asked “are you *sure* you want to go USNA???” in like 2012
