Looks like Russia could be in real trouble with its tanks - if they’ve lost 4,800 in 4 years (1,200 year average) and can only replace 200 a year in new production with just 4,000 available including storage, they’ll really have to limit their use on the battlefield.

Mutual withdrawal with a UN peacekeeping force to monitor compliance and Ukraine with binding security guarantees could be a reasonable compromise to end the war - of course Putin won’t accept this unless the US and Europe threaten to significantly increase sanctions and weapons supply to Ukraine

Ukraine can’t win this war without troops and it has a terrible shortage of them. While I don’t buy that as the reason why Merz made that statement it doesn’t get away from the truth of it.

There’s good videos of the landings and looks like the helicopters got out ok but Russians are putting up lots of videos that look like the special forces team too heavy casualties from drones after they landed. Hope that’s fake

If it’s an UN sanctioned mission, Ireland could probably send a battalion of peacekeepers to patrol any demilitarized zone and observe for violations, but they would not do peace enforcement.

Unfortunately if you don’t have the ability to reclaim by force and you risk losing even more then it’s the best that can be achieved. Keeping the de jure claim is important cause you never know when Russia might just implode over the next 100 years and the territory can be retaken.

It’s horrible and not fair but the question is - can Ukraine prevent Russia from taking the rest of Donetsk within the next couple of years with the levels of support it gets from the West and what it can mobilize itself. Because if it can’t then what deal does Ukraine expect to get?

That would be a fantastic opportunity to inflict massive losses on the Russians although it does require UAF to spread limited troops even further

The marching compared to other military parades was really sloppy and very low energy - probably reflective of the soldiers attitudes of being used like that. A military parade is a great thing when done well but do it for July 4th and don’t make it political

Europe is a sleeping giant. The Russians would be well advised not to wake it. Small numbers are a temporary issue with a 500 million population. Its Air Force and Navy could completely turn the tide, and a combined economy that if moved to a war time footing could overwhelm the Russians
