My colleague Jack Bouchard's book Terra Nova is out today! It's about early 16th-century mariners and the seasonal fishery around present-day Newfoundland, and its place within the Atlantic World. I cannot wait to read it

Sent this q to VICTORIA, but also figure I should ask here — does anyone know of scholarship on strategies that advertisers (e.g. of fraudulent or illegal goods or services) used to evade surveillence, esp in Victorian Britain? Or strategies that advertisers used to track responses to ads in +

If you are a supporter and reader of @contingent-mag.bsky.social one of the biggest things you can do to help us at the moment is get this CFP to the NTT folks in your life. The fracturing of social media has made it very difficult to get the word out esp. to adjuncts and VAPs.
CFP: A Time of Monsters
The monster has been here all along. It is a historical constant that manifests in wildly different ways across time, place, and culture. Whatever form it takes, the monster claws at categories; it un...

my wife is a Cal fan and apparently this week they’re putting a “59” on their football helmets to honor the 59 Nobel laureates tied to Cal in order to flex on Duke

this is maybe my favorite dunk anyone has ever done on Duke

Another call for sources: I'm reporting on pediatric Covid vaccine access. If you've had trouble finding pediatric doses in stock, or if your child was turned away, I'd love to hear from you: [email protected].

Thanks to those who replied to my pregnancy callout; that story will be out soon.

Unless and until you have at least one cat in your household you will never realize how often the phrase “obligate carnivore” comes out of your mouth. “Stop stealing Cheez-It’s, Charley! You’re an obligate carnivore!” “Get your paw out of my son’s oatmeal, Chessie! You’re an obligate carnivore!”

This weekend I went to a service for a friend, a great reader and book-discusser in my bookclub.

Her colon cancer had reached stage 4 before she knew about it.

I mention it, because I once talked another friend into getting a colonoscopy and her tumor was found in time. Do it.
