A voltage accelerates spontaneously ionised particles, they cause further ionisation. >0.06s: a ring-shaped current flows. >0.15s: the particles bound to magnetic field lines interact with cold edge layer. 0.35s: temperature in the centre >10 million degrees. >0.5s: plasma has reached final form.

We opened the vacuum vessel of ASDEX Upgrade and found a white crystal layer. It forms through chemical reactions between water and boron, introduced during the regular boronisation process. We sprayed distilled water and wiped it off with a cloth. The layer appears after each experiment campaign.

In the HTS4Fusion project, the IPP is working with THEVA Dünnschichttechnik and FRM II to develop robust magnetic coils for future fusion power plants based on high-temperature superconductors (HTS). The first models are being built at IPP in Garching. www.ipp.mpg.de/5548072/hts4... #fusionenergy

Plasma beats at Expo 2025 Osaka: ASDEX Upgrade data turned into an audiovisual show. A Berlin-based artist duo used measurement pulses from ASDEX Upgrade to design a monumental sound and light show. The ITER Organisation presented it on 13 July as part of Fusion Energy Day in Osaka. #fusionenergy

Last Friday, representatives of one of the most influential executive networks in German economy visited our institute in Garching. The 40 members of the Baden-Baden Entrepreneur Talks were also informed about Bavaria's high-tech agenda by Markus Blume, Bavarian Minister of State for Science.

Today, Federal Minister of Research Dorothee Bär visited us in Garching. After meeting IPP directors, she toured the ASDEX Upgrade fusion facility and learned about the status of fusion research.

Through collaboration between European and US researchers, Wendelstein 7-X achieved a world record for the central parameter of fusion physics - the triple product. This value surpasses the previous tokamak records for long plasma durations. www.ipp.mpg.de/5532945/w7x

What we see glowing in our fusion experiments is just the cooler edge of the plasma with "only" 100,000 degrees Celsius. For a fusion reaction, we need more than 100 million degrees – hotter than the Sun. The radiation emitted in that inner plasma zone is invisible to the human eye. #dayoflight
