Truth About Plastic
@plasticscrisis.bsky.social
Plastics and petrochemical production are not aligned with a climate-safe future or the universal right to a clean, healthy environment ✊
5/ Do some people think the other 22.5m tonnes of bottles referred to above eventually dematerialise after 'recycling'? Plastics recycling as a fix for the growing plastic pollution crisis is magical thinking - and it needs challenging now.

4/ It's casual misinformation like this that keeps the recycling myth alive and the plastic tap turned on fully. By shapeshifting plastics or downcycling them into fleeces, etc we are just delaying their debut as pollution. (Of which landfill and incineration are a part).

3/ The report states that we use 38.5 million plastic bottles a day in the UK and that 16 million end up in landfill, incineration or as pollution. The truth is that the full 38.5 million end up in landfill, incineration or as pollution, it’s just that some are diverted for a few months or years.

2/ Journalists and politicians do a great job of perpetuating the myth that recycling plastics somehow makes them “go away”. For example, this story in Edie: www.edie.net/fibre-based-...

He’s a petrochemical billionaire who knows exactly what the legacy of his chemical and plastic pollution is doing to human health. Sportwashing has been a good way of ensuring that people walk around with the name of a company that makes carcinogens and endocrine disrupters on their chests. Clever.

And that means reduction by legislation- even if 5 billion of us switch to bamboo toothbrushes that’s not going to sort this. This is a system problem, not an individuals problem. 👍

👍Once you’ve got your plastic eyes on, you can see what’s happening… tech, cars, cladding, insulation, roofs, shops, clothes. We have become a plastic-based society within 8 decades. It’s all heading for incineration. We need global caps on production. “Reduce”is our top priority at this time.
