The monitor lizard in my banner is a Varanus varius in Copenhagen Zoo.
Being the most poisonous animal species on the planet, not much scares this one.

Thank you for the (sad) update. They remind me of the 2,2 Elaphe sauromates I kept back in the day. Very similar in appearance.

When I saw the red-winged starling (Onychognathus morio), my first thought was 'It's pretty, but it's no Hildebrandt's starling'. Shortly after you link to Wikipedia which happens to show none other than Hildebrandt's starling. Just after I'd thought about that one for the first time in years.

When I took my drivers license, we had to spend some hours driving under slippery conditions on a track (in groups of 6). I'd played a lot of the original 1991 Formula One Grand Prix by MicroProse/Geoff Crammond. That was probably why I was the only one of us who didn't spin the car even once.

It is made of soft tissue. It's purpose is not well understood. A possible explanation is that it is used in communication (attracting a mate and/or 'scaring' away a competitor).

I saw them live in Copenhagen on Feb. 9th, 1996. That was 11 days before the album Roots was released. Even MTV was there to report on the world premiere of their upcoming album. I sprained my ankle quite badly entering the venue and proceeded to stand/jump on my left leg for ~2 hours. Great show.

Something about bright colours being associated with being poisonous.

I'm really trying, but I simply can't remember. I'll come back with a better reply if I find out. I never owned one myself - I was more into a few other genres.

Oh, we had somethin similar here in Denmark. Thanks!

This is the first time I've heard the German word 'Kuschelrock'.

Is it related to what in the 80s was known as 'poodle rock'? It was infamous for relying more on exaggerated perms than on the music itself.

And they also have a local representative of what is allegedly the nastiest bird in the world: the southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius).

However, as is the case with too many animals, humans are a greater threat to them, than they are to us (sharks were another example which came to mind).

Australian white ibis (Threskiornis molucca), I think.

Sorry, I only noticed that your post was that old when I had posted my reply. I take it you already identified the lizard.

Australian water dragon (Intellagama lesueurii).
