A creative person can produce unexpected / not-the-most-likely pieces of text, and know they're good, because they mean something to the artist.

Poetry, stories, jokes...

But an LLM wandering against "expected" is necessarily also wandering into "unconfident", mathematically to the same degree

I'm no expert, but I imagine that post-training / fine-tuning provides an opportunity to reward little "creative flourishes", like colourful descriptions and mild whimsy,

but it still can't *both* surprise you *and also* reward itself for doing so, since "novel" and "best fit" are directly at odds.

But does an uncreative person see the AI-generated bedtime story, and truly lack the ability to distinguish it from an actually good human-written story? Human-illustrated story?

I consider myself a creative person, and I'm not strongly anti-AI generally, but I think it's woefully bad at creativity

When an uncreative person sees AI generate a bedtime story for their child, I could see why they might think "this is better than what I could do."

(Is that really true? I'm sure they could improve quickly (take an improv class!), but I could see why they might think it)

And ALL 3 of those films got children's cartoon show treatments. There were 3 different Jim Carrey's in animated form on TV at once. Unprecedented.

It's got everything. I made this mashup a long time ago because that song and the Elton John song my dad was listening to around the same time sounded the same to me (complimentary)

I've come around. As a kid I had a sense that the Gameboy spinoffs were made by the "B" team. Didn't appreciate that that could mean they were much less tied down by the weight of the franchise. Links awakening is beautiful!

Same. Goombas in the 2D dungeon sections of Link's Awakening? I was like, "Okay, this is not a serious game." (derogatory)

Slowing it down to see if there's a moment where every foot is off the ground

That's been the *messaging* around meat wrt climate for a long time, but in reality it's been a massive losing struggle to get that to actually impact people's eating & buying habits. Consumption of it continues to climb.
So with AI use / web servers in general - regulation needs to come top down.

The societal conditions were primed for its massive and inappropriate adoption. We'd already built an internet, an economy even, that incentivizes the bulk and dispassionate generation of words, with little regard for their factuality, or accountability for their impact. LLMs are *the* tool for that
