I’ve been thinking a lot about how we contribute to our own suffering by not giving ourselves the time to grieve old selves and not often updating our self concept🤔 words from Grieving Mindfully by Sameet M. Kumar
We grieve whenever an anchor in our understanding of our identity is lost. Picture your identity as a necklace of precious stones that comes undone and needs to be restrung. If some stones are lost, new ones must be added to replace the old ones. Grief can be understood as the process of picking up the pieces of your identity (the stones) without the help of someone you had assumed would always be there, or without a relationship that was a crucial part of your life (the string). Grief is the process of finding out who you are in a world that is barely recognizable because of the tremendous change that has taken place. You may not be able to answer the question, "Who am I?" for a long time after your loss. UNDERSTANDING GRIEF A common concern voiced by grieving people is what they can expect of the grieving process. This is almost an impossible question to answer, since everyone's journey through grief is different. Each grief is

Metal health hack I’ve been doing for the last 3yrs: set up reminders on your phone w sweet things you want to hear. Repeat it every few hrs, days or weekly and when it comes up on your phone, really pause what you’re doing, take in the compliment and take deep grounding breaths

Foreword by JEFFREY BRANTLEY, MD, author of Calming Your Anxious Mind *top pet cut off* Grieving mindfully can be understood as being consciously aware of the intense pain of love after loss. This may sound a bit strange at first, since the pain can seem to be swallowing you up, and you may feel that you are all too aware of it, often to the point of not being aware of anything else. Such emotions can make it difficult to find meaning in your existence and can rob you of a sense of purpose and direction. You are probably already feeling some of the intense emotional pain of grief and are wondering why you would possibly want to be aware of its intensity. Awareness is not the same as indulging in the intensity of grief, nor is allowing yourself to come into full contact with your thoughts and feelings after loss the same as wallowing in pain, or keeping yourself in pain. Awareness is allowing yourself to accept the pain of grief, thereby finding relief in not running away from your loss. Grieving mindfully is the process of using your emotional vulnerability not to suffer greater distress, or to intensify your pain, but to redirect this pain toward your growth as a human being. Engaging in this process begins when you come in full contact with yourself and learn to ride the waves of grief. Your thoughts, your feelings, your identity after loss all become vehicles for your own evolution. Grieving mindfully can be understood as making the decision to allow yourself to mourn, and to fully experience the lessons of grief with the goal of living life better. The terrible emotional pain of grief tends to have a life and process of its own. Allowing the process to unfold with mindful aware-ness—a sense of purpose and direction to the pain-may not remove all distress, but it can soften the sharp edge of pain. To allow the process means to allow yourself to feel and experience each day on its own terms; we cannot assume that we know what tomorrow will bring. As you are experiencing this process, you will feel that very natural pull to escape or numb yourself from the pain. However, by being aware of grief rather than ignoring or denying it, and by working to understand what drives this pain, you can release yourself into the person you are and the person you want to be. In other words, with mindful awareness of your grief, you can move closer to the people in your life who matter the most, and change habits or ideas that have been keeping you from living fully. Full awareness, especially in grief, of your patterns of thought, feelings, and behavior can take you from living with misery, fear, and discontent to living with openness and passion. Simply put, grieving mindfully enables us to use the tremendous influx of emotional energy that comes from experiencing loss to nurture life. Grieving mindfully means approaching your grief as an opportunity to grow by actively giving meaning to your pain. Channeling the momentum of grief into a journey of awakening is difficult if you are trying to rush the process or if you become completely numb to your feelings.
