Ultimatum can be done instead of sanctum. Sanctum can be done instead of ultimatum.

You can see it with the in game ascendancy trial items. They say if you will get ascendancy points or not.
So if you skip/avoid sanctum and do ultimatum first at 4 rounds, when you get your first 7 round item, it'll say ascendancy points available.
Does mean like lvl30ish start over 22 though

You can go Izario/ultimatum 4 rounds to get the first ascendancy, then Izario 7 rounds to get second ascendancy, then Izario 10 rounds to get third then fight Izario himself for fourth Ascendancy.
