💬 The public are "putting an awful lot of hope on the idea of apprenticeships...It’s partly because we’ve been so bad at doing them that people can put all of that hope on to them because they’ve got so little experience of them."

Great discussion ongoing right now, positive to hear how much energy there is across the board especially the Minister, for a joined-up, place-based, modern skills system. ETF is here to support this agenda.

🪙 'This is the first “gold standard” RCT of financial education in UK primary schools'

@johnnyrunge.bsky.social sets out what policymakers can learn from it

"Thanks to our latest evidence, we know financial education can be effective, even in primary schools. What’s needed now is leadership and a clear national framework"

@johnnyrunge.bsky.social for @schoolsweek.bsky.social on findings from our major trial of financial education in primary schools
How can we finally make financial education a reality?
Our RCT shows how government can deliver what the public at large wants without over-burdening teachers

Importantly, this phase demonstrated that it is feasible to run a full randomised controlled trial of the Personal Grants programme in the UK.

The lessons learned are now shaping the next phase of this important project, which has been successfully underway since July
policyatkings.bsky.social
There are also early indications that the grants may support wellbeing by enabling longer-term decision-making and greater stability
policyatkings.bsky.social
This initial qualitative research paints an encouraging picture: participants used their grants for positive purchases, such as essentials and reconnecting with family, with no evidence of spending on drugs, alcohol or gambling
policyatkings.bsky.social
"Participants told us they used their grants to secure housing, improve wellbeing, and rebuild personal stability."

We've just completed phase 1 of our work with @homelessnessimpact.bsky.social on the first major UK trial of unconditional cash transfers for people experiencing homelessness ⬇️ 🧵

"Students at King’s College London with similar upbringings will write to disadvantaged teenagers to share their stories and challenge perceptions that university is only for the privileged".

The Independent on work led by @michael-sanders.bsky.social ⬇️
Disadvantaged pupils to get letters encouraging them to apply to university
Nearly 10,000 teenagers at schools and colleges with low higher education progression rates will receive letters from current university students.

policyatkings.bsky.social
@kingscollegelondon.bsky.social student Kemi Adeyemi – now a resident doctor – met pupils who received her letter this week. She said:

"It’s so important that young people know that their background doesn’t determine where they can study"
policyatkings.bsky.social
💬 Some of the letter recipients spoke to the Guardian about the project:

"It changed my view of what's achievable"

"It made me feel a bit more confident, reading other people's experience of university, telling them they are not alone on their journey"
policyatkings.bsky.social
✍️ The letters encourage the pupils to consider applying to selective universities, highlight the potential benefits of higher education and detail the financial support available through bursaries
policyatkings.bsky.social
📊 The intervention, which has previously been evaluated through a large-scale randomised trial, involves sending letters written by current university students who come from similar socioeconomic backgrounds to Year 12 pupils, many of whom attend schools that send fewer qualified students to uni
