Again, he probably knows better what he's asking for than I do and therefore gets better results

With that sad, I have a friend who works out of the treasurer's office for a fairly large city in Michigan and he does huge amounts of complicated data formatting and spreadsheets and he's had relative success getting chat GPT to help him with coding to create formatting that works for him.

But then it seems to forget everything. I've taught it the next time I needed to do that.

Again, another caveat I'm using very basic versions of these AI and I am not a data scientist like you, so it's entirely possible if I knew the right way to ask, I would get better results.

I've had mixed results with getting it to do formatting because there's some things that I need to send to the local paper and they like them formatted in terms of data a very specific way and I can usually sort of cajole it into doing it correctly for me...

Let alone 60 essays on that subject!

Maybe catching trends in performance that I was missing. But in my experience it just doesn't do that very well.

BIG CAVEAT - I'm using the lowest rate pay level of chat GPT and a free version of Gemini. it's entirely possible that better versions of AI just handle these things more competently.

But in reality I have to constantly go back and remind it of details and correct it on mistakes. It's making mistakes applying some data to the wrong person or conflating data between multiple people. I had really hoped that it would both work as a memory augmentation for me and data analytics...

To your further point about Data handling and analysis. I have only tinkered slightly with Gemini, and primarily have used chatGPT for this; but I really had high hopes that I would be able to provide, over the course of a golf season, lots of data and AI would identify trends that I had missed.

And I think this is where people like my wife, who are fighting the good fight, are looking for help from the rest of the adults in the room. If kids are turning to AI to do their writing for them immediately then they're never gaining that context about when and where to use it properly.
December 3, 2025 at 3:30 PM
With all of that said...

Understanding when and where AI can take over basic writing functions requires the context of having done all kinds of writing and understanding all kinds of audiences and all kinds of context in order to know when to use it and use it well.

It saves me from having to do the same tedious little bit of write-up 2 or 3 days a week during boys season and then again in girls season. And the AI writing is perfectly acceptable for this task. Having me sit down and write up a bespoke summary is simply not a good use of my time.
December 3, 2025 at 3:30 PM
It doesn't need to be particularly engaging. It simply needs to convey, in very simple terms, a message that includes some basic data about results. And I've trained my AI to accept screenshots of results and a couple of quick voice notes from me and auto generate those performance summaries.
December 3, 2025 at 3:30 PM
That summary will the be read by students during student announcements at the end of the school day. Critically this is going to be read by a high school student in a bare monotone while the vast majority of kids are not paying attention. ...
December 3, 2025 at 3:30 PM
But there is a certain amount of the writing that we do that is simply formulaic and doesn't need to be special or well thought out or bespoke.

As a high school golf coach, I'm responsible for providing a short summary of competitions that get sent to my athletic director and the student paper...

Your point about bland yet functional text is well taken. There are a lot of people (my wife included, who is a high school English teacher) who are very frustrated with how quickly people turn to AI for their writing and I think that frustration is justified.

Understanding nuance in marginal performance in one sport enhances ones ability to observe and appreciate it in other sports
December 3, 2025 at 1:43 AM
In my experience, appreciation doesn't have to come from having played the sport in question. It comes from competing at an elite level in any sport. Athletes appreciate athletes. It's not that people who haven't played can't appreciate it, but some pieces to the puzzle will always be missing.

Ok ok ok dumb joke. Honestly Christmas movies aren't really my thing so I'm useless beyond the usual recommendations.
