Retired Meteorologist in Charge and former Army officer.
Watched the George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol last night. Feel like we are closer to 19th century society than at any time in life.

The OPM guidance memorandums to the departments provide clear examples of intent. My thoughts go out to the civil servants who continue to adhere to their constitutional oaths.

Skydance doesn't seem interested in a TOS Year One with the SNW crew. Maybe their CEO would go for a Terran Empire series with that cast. Seems appropriate given the times. Ethan Peck would look good with a goatee 🖖

A leader can delegate authority, but not responsibility.

Thank you sir for reminding us that human nature has changed little through the centuries as it pertains to waging war and establishing a lasting peace.

Unlawful orders place military and civil servants in a tricky situation. You can lose your job (relief) and freedom (court martial) if you are wrong. Probable shitstorm if you are right and the chain of command blows a gasket. Been in that situation in front line combat.

Disobeyed an unlawful order on a very active battlefield as a junior Army officer (Platoon Leader). Doing so put my career and freedom in jeopardy if I was wrong. JAG officers were in the rear echelon. Thankfully nothing adverse came of it.

Saddens me to watch American participation in a 75 year old alliance which helped safeguard and expand freedom and prosperity in Europe likely coming to an end. The Europeans will figure out how to move on without us.

The video also reminds civilian intelligence officers of their oaths of office and unlawful orders. The federal civil servant oath also requires discernment regarding orders from the chain of command.

The 1920s America First policy paid dividends through most of the decade. The economic collapse (1929) was followed by the existential military threat (National Socialist Germany and Imperial Japan) a decade later.

Hmm...student loan forgiveness?

I had a conversation with a former neighbor in October 2024. Started with weather control and FEMA not being in NC. Moved on to what would happen to federal employees in a second term. She didn't believe a word of what I said even though federal meteorology was my profession for 32 years.

Combining operations and research into one line office is a short sighted idea which will cause scientific stagnation in the coming years. The requirement to "run the railroad" will stifle applied innovation.

Departments and agencies are often frugal during CRs to mitigate the risk of anti-deficiency if the full year appropriations come in leaner than anticipated. The language in the proposed CR indicates very austere budgets through 1/30/26.

Caving in to protect the filibuster makes that legislative tool almost useless moving forward. What keeps the head of state and the Senate majority from making future threats to get what they want?

Three months of time off in their home districts must be boring them.

One of the best Speakers in our nation's history. Admired her courage and conviction in this challenging era.

The government played down or denied for years the sporadic WMD incidents during the First Gulf War including the Khamisiyah munitions depot demolition (sarin gas). I was a combat engineer officer in Safwan at the time. The government's eagerness to play up WMD twelve years later made me suspicious.
