Joann and I spent most of today traveling home from Illinois, so we are just now catching up on the news. What has not changed is our belief in this party and in the work before us.

Today’s news is a sign of something larger. A country waking up. Ordinary people refusing to sit quietly while extremists try to claim the mantle of God. Hope is not a feeling. Hope is movement. And today the movement is on our side.

They are showing rural and suburban voters that the Democratic Party hears them. They are reminding independents that their values have a home. They are reminding all of us that our vote matters and the future is not set in stone.

People are tired of cruelty being sold as Christianity. They are tired of faith being hijacked for power. These new Democratic candidates are proving that you can follow Christ, fight for justice, and run for office at the same time.

These are not elites. These are working class Christians who grew up in the same pews as the families now being divided by angry politics. They are running because they believe Democrats are the ones feeding the hungry, protecting the poor, and lifting up working people.

The Guardian and Axios are reporting that nearly thirty white Christian clergy from places like Texas, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Arkansas are stepping forward to run for office as Democrats. Pastors and faith leaders who refuse to let Christian nationalism twist the Gospel.
