Universal childcare would be one of the best ways to stimulate the economy. Studies have shown an increase in workplace participation and wages. For kids, it helps foster development. The ROI on childcare is insane.

Excuse the fk me? All government employees are entitled to back pay from the Republican shutdown due to a law Trump HIMSELF signed in 2019 called Government Employee Fair Treatment Act.

Like I said, really, really bad cooks. I’ll be posting more about the news but this is a full blown data crisis if the president goes through with the firing
politicoricky.bsky.social
A few things could be happening. Getting more survey data later, less respondents creating more volatility, less staff to collect. It could also just be a one off. Anomalies happen from time to time

Note: this month’s numbers are preliminary. We’ll see updated numbers for June (second revision) and July (first revision) next month.

The latest jobs report (+73k jobs created) is mediocre. The revisions are brutal. May revised (-125k) to only +19k. June revised (-133k) down to only +14k.

At least this shows the admin isn’t cooking the numbers. Or they’re just really, really bad cooks.

Best thing about that is that Sweden is actually very capitalist. Social programs actually strengthen capitalism

This is not just with census. Response rates for all sorts of surveys are down + less staff compounds the issue
politicoricky.bsky.social
Well that’s everything in society. Even the phone you’re using had input from public research dollars.

I meant “we” as in society. Collectively, we do shame people for having kids late or not at all. I don’t because it’s not my business. But many people don’t mind their own business.

There are a lot of issues with expanding childcare. One of the biggest is low pay. Higher pay naturally attracts more talent. Improved immigration naturally increases the talent pool.

Thank you. Going to look into this some more

That’s fine but then we have to stop shaming people for not having kids or having politicians say “we need to encourage the growth of the family.”

Childcare lowers barriers to entry and there’s a net benefit to the economy. Everyone benefits from it

Birthright means if you’re born here, you’re automatically a citizen. It doesn’t trace lineage

I partially blame the short-termism of bigger public companies that have to answer to shareholders. The best companies invest in both people and capital and see great growth. But that takes investment up front in training, pay, and benefits which shareholders don’t like.

Regarding the flooding: GOP doesn’t want to fund the programs that predict these things, but they still want to blame the federal government for not predicting this. DOGE has consequences

Yes, it’s also a different entity. ADP uses their clients’ data so it’s a subset of the economy
politicoricky.bsky.social
I always say that numbers don’t lie, people do.
politicoricky.bsky.social
Those are different sources. ADP looks at their own client data. BLS is broader based using CPS and CES survey data
politicoricky.bsky.social
Well yeah that’s how it’s always been. They use the two surveys and do modeling. They’re revised later due to obtaining more info later.

NPR reported that a big concern is survey respondents giving information since DOGE got access to private info. So getting a good sample is tougher
politicoricky.bsky.social
It’s roughly on par. Though these numbers will be revised in two months as late data comes in
