Did you know people once thought insects could magically appear out of mud or rotting food, aka spontaneous generation?

Today we know they’re far more fascinating, with complex life cycles and survival strategies.

Buff-tailed bumblebees are one of Europe’s go-to managed pollinator. They’ll fly in relative cold, and can even “buzz pollinate” by vibrating flowers to shake pollen loose!

Many bumblebee colonies are winding down. New queens are leaving the nest to hibernate, ready to start fresh colonies next spring. Late species like Bombus pascuorum can still be seen foraging into autumn.

Did you plant any pumpkins this year? This years’ false autumn has some gardens yield smaller produce. How about yours?

Late summer can be a great time for pollinator spotting. Look out for ivy bees, bumblebees, and hoverflies on late-blooming flowers. What’s been visiting your garden or balcony this week?

Wow! Hopefully you’ll get some rain soon!!

Drought stresses plants and pollinators alike. Flowers produce less nectar during dry spells, though the sugar concentration can increase. This could mean that pollinators must work harder for fewer rewards. What changes have you noticed in your garden this summer?

Yesterday we were out catching and marking pollinators on three rooftops, two of them more than 10 stories high, to see if they were travelling between them!

Pollinators use a mix of cues to find flowers, including scent, shape, nectar quality/volume, and even chemicals like caffeine, which can make them more likely to return.

Some flowers even smell stronger in the morning when bees are most active!

Spotted a spiky little bug on your plants? It might be a ladybird larva!🐞

They look totally different from adults but are great garden helpers, eating aphids by the dozen.

Forget-me-nots change colour after being visited by a pollinator, signalling to the next insect that they’ve already been emptied.

It’s a clever way of saving the bee some time and spreading the pollen more efficiently!

Some flowers, like from the coffee plant, use caffeine to attract bees, helping them remember the flower and come back for more.

But in high doses, certain natural compounds like caffeine or nicotine can actually deter or harm them. Nature’s balance is a fine one.

Pollinators don’t see flowers the way we do. Bees love blue, purple and violet patterns that guide them to nectar. Your garden could be a treasure map in bee vision!
