Yeah, what I'm seeing is a lot of intelligent people are disengaging from politics not because of "lack of people power" but because a lot of unthinking people are getting riled up and having a big impact on politics.

Unless you have a significant following with them, there is nothing you can do!

So theory is the hook you use to sell your narrative to make people feel empowered.... and prevent populists from picking holes on social media under the guise of "Common sense"?
January 17, 2026 at 9:37 AM
Social media gives any loon with a daft idea a platform as well as the ability to find and learn from other loons!

If you want to follow sensible voices you can. But if you want misinformation that fits your beliefs, well there is plenty of that!

I'm not sure how you solve it!

I agree their business model is trash as they'll never turn enough of a profit to cover the investment!

However, I can see the IP and brand having genuine value for the big players. Admittedly this depends on what deals they have already done!
January 16, 2026 at 10:27 PM
In this case there is a genuine fear of missing out. Microsoft and Google need LLMs to keep their consumer/ business products relevant.

When the bottom falls off the market, then both companies will be outbidding each other to buy Anthropic or OpenAI!

I agree that the telegraph is a horrible rag with a dubious right wing agenda. But I'm glad that Dempsey is been shown for what he is regardless!
January 16, 2026 at 10:05 PM
Surely we are influenced by what is around us. If others are being reactionary (left or right) then that gives us license to do the same.

Equally if we are being challenged by thoughtful people/opinions than we are more likely to embrace nuance!
January 12, 2026 at 1:33 PM
That's probably true. In the early days of social media there was a belief that people would have access to more information (not just garbage from the tabloid press).

Sadly it seems the type of people who trusted the Sun now chose to believe nonsense shared by their peers on social media!
January 11, 2026 at 12:43 PM
Of course we shouldn't ban X. Plenty of social media platforms have unpleasant content.

However the government and MPs needs to think careful about whether they want to distribute information on a platform that also shares such unsavory images!

It sends a signal about where their values lie!
January 11, 2026 at 12:34 PM
I've heard this theory and I'm not sure it is the right way around! But I may have missed something!

My view is a load of angry ignorant people were given hand held supercomputers in the 2010s that enabled them get in touch with each other and to "research" ideas that fitted their priors!
January 10, 2026 at 9:54 PM
Personally don't think it needs banning. Lots of social media platforms have unsavory content.

I do think there is a strong case for the government simply stopping using it as a distribution platform and encouraging MPs and major organisations to do the same.

Let X turn into MySpace!

The consequences will them sit firmly with the next president (likely a democrat) ensuring MAGA2.0 return to power on 2028!

Another reason why we need to be increasingly trying to anchor to the EU and be less reliant on an erratic USA!
January 10, 2026 at 3:49 PM
Thought so. It ironically appeared in my feed next to one about protests in Iran. There would be quite some irony to the Iranians getting rid of a repressive government as the USA are increasingly moving towards one!
January 8, 2026 at 11:30 PM
Is this subtweeting developments in Iran or lack of it in the USA?
January 8, 2026 at 11:24 PM
The bit I struggle with (based on the link) is he was formerly at TikTok. He must therefore know that TikTok, instagram and youtube shorts have a much greater reach than Twitter.

So logically government comms should be primarily on those platforms... with twitter as an after thought!
January 8, 2026 at 10:13 PM
He behaves literally like a toddler! I can only assume that his supporters turn a blind eye to this to "own the libs".
January 7, 2026 at 11:42 PM
Isn't it ironic that politicans than most worry about their legacy seem to be the ones who leave a trial of destruction.

You need a vision to inspire people. But beyond that high level stear, your number one job is basically to keep things working and ideally slowly improving!
January 7, 2026 at 11:34 PM
Charismatic charlatan who get elected based a minority of the population who like his vibes and have some lazy xenophobic tendencies. What could possibly go wrong?
January 7, 2026 at 9:24 PM
Just shows the stupidity of the free speech and social media debate.

These platforms are about engagement not free speech. They have the algorithms, prominent voices and social norms which determine what content gets a favourable viewing!

Frankly they should be regulated like normal media!
January 7, 2026 at 9:15 AM
Didn't he hatch the brexit referendum plan with Cameron (despite Osborne's objections).

I really don't think Hague gets the opprobrium he deserves for that critical lapse in political judgement!

(Cameron in fairness does but seems to have no sense of shame anyway!)
January 6, 2026 at 9:51 PM
Presumably there is a risk of Trump going all Fwee Speech and doing something petulant and stupid!
January 5, 2026 at 9:09 PM
All starts to get a bit Lord Haw Haw ish. Reach may want to consider if this is the direction they want to go in!
January 5, 2026 at 11:03 AM
Yeah I don't think the GOP is going to become the Reagan/Bush party again.

Nor do I think the people who thought Trump2.0 was a good move are going to turn into woke liberals.

The Democrats may win back everything soon but it is likely that MAGA republicans will return to power at some point!
