Told ya! They DO talk. Up to all of us, no matter what party we support in opposition, to be cooperative, express unity and ultimately, win. We are up against HUGE money, but we have the numbers.

"Under MMP, Labour’s fortunes will inevitably be tied to the Green Party, and to Te Pāti Māori. Behind the scenes, senior party staffers are shaping up conversations about what governance could look like. The three parties’ chiefs of staff share a Signal group chat".

Vote [1] Matthew Reweti for returning Ngā Hau e Whā o Paparārangi to Māori.

This whenua belongs with the marae. I’ll take it to the Council table.

Under-representation is one of the reasons we have Māori wards.

Toitū te Tiriti. Honouring the Treaty is another.

In my example, a real example, the two collide.

185 years ago, Te Āti Awa rangatira signed Te Tiriti here in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, expecting their rangatiratanga would be upheld. This includes a voice in local government. Since then, only ONE iwi member has ever sat on Council. That’s not partnership. #under-representation. #KEEPMāoriWards

This weekend is a really good time to vote to KEEP Maori wards.

And for your preferred candidates. ;)

It was a pleasure to do my 7th and final candidates meeting in Brooklyn last night. A fun evening with an engaged audience.

There are only two wards that didn’t have any meetings that include/invite Māori ward candidates. They were Takapū Northern and Motukairangi Eastern.

If you’re not happy with the current government, send them a message. Vote to keep Māori wards #pōti

A daily reminder.

The best people to decide for Māori are Māori.

#māoriwards

Just as the best people to decide for mana whenua… are mana whenua.

So where does that leave us?

National has been a disaster of their own making. Absolute failure.

Under-representation is one reason for Māori wards

Despite signing Te Tiriti for the rohe known as Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Only one uri of the rangatira of Te Āti Awa has ever made it to Council’s top table

185 years after my tūpuna signed. And 155 years of local govt. I’m standing to be the second
ponekematt.bsky.social
I will use the endorsement to make Te Whanganui-a-Tara a fairer and better place for all Māori.

It took a lot of work to get this endorsement, but I stuck at it. And stuck at it.

That’s the work ethic I’ll bring to Te Whanganui-a-Tara Māori Ward. That’s the work ethic voters deserve.

When mana whenua endorse their own, that’s saying we don’t want others speaking for us. That’s saying ‘we want our own voice at the table’.

Honour Te Tiriti.
Vote [1] Matthew Reweti.

I finally found one of those Supermarket bargains
ponekematt.bsky.social
Structural barriers include:

Māori make up around 17% of the national population and even smaller proportion of urban areas

A lack of historical inclusion and success has dettered Māori from putting their names forward

Being selected for parties, or resourcing and funding as indep. candidates

“Aren’t Māori wards an extra cost?”

The cost comes from forcing referendums, not the wards themselves.

All councillors are paid from the same pool. Without MW that pool is simply shared among fewer councillors.

Any costs are small compared to the benefits of inclusive and effective governance.

Māori wards

“Can’t Māori just get elected in general wards?”

While some Māori do, they are the exception.
Māori wards remove structural barriers, not merit.
They create equity, not privilege.

Māori wards

“Aren’t Māori wards undemocratic?”

No. Māori wards strengthen democracy

For over 150 years, Māori have been under-represented in local government

Māori wards make sure tangata whenua voices, promised under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, are heard

#pōti #toitūtetiriti #māoriwards #referendum

The facts.

“Don’t Māori wards divide communities?”

No. They acknowledge diversity and bring communities together.

When more voices are at the table, councils make better decisions for everyone.

Vote to KEEP Māori wards.
