That said, this is not a seismic shift, and I am 0/2 on predicting conclaves so far. Tagle and Parolin are still among the top contenders, probably in that order, and a surprise is still reasonably likely, as is always the case with modern conclaves.

Cardinal Zuppi is also from Rome itself, which may be a larger factor when the Cardinals have their hackles raised against outside intervention.

The real clincher tied to the Trump self-insert is the Cardinals tend to react to such very negatively, making a relative moderate safe bet like Parolin perhaps less appealing than an option that would send a strong message.

Parolin's star was already falling because he has not demonstrated Francis' ability to woo the media.
