Why is mathematics education failing some of the world’s most talented children?

In our editorial this week, we turn to education, a topic we’ve been interested in since the early days of Nature, back in the late 1900s

“We would like to see this data in Illinois,” Galvin said. “If policy were to change at the [U.S. Department of Education], we would lose all data about how schools are interacting with law enforcement, and that is really concerning to us.”

When Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter moved to DC in 1977, they enrolled their 9-year-old daughter Amy at a public school founded in 1868 for Black children and named after abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens.

Carter remains the only president since Teddy Roosevelt to send a child to public school in DC.

Yesterday, student debtors went to DC to demand Biden cancel student debt. A 71 y/o woman joined us.

No one from the Ed Dept would meet with her — or any of our older debtors. Her new loan statement was in the mail when she got home today.

Her balance is $656,542.80.

She borrowed ~$60k in 1985.

Fascinating paper on where 6000 global elites went to college. Billionaires, CEOs, heads of state, central bankers, etc.

In a word: Harvard.

Fully 10% of global elites went to Harvard. Elite US schools are over-represented (23% IvyPlus), but nobody comes close to Harvard.
