Specifically on the state of the social web, ATProto has been a glimmer of hope, more so as the ecosystem has continued to grow beyond Bluesky, hinting at possible futures. I was too late for pre-dot-com Y2K but from where I stand, in some ways I can understand how exciting it must have been
Good analysis on the Y2K aesthetic, its origins and demise. There's been a slight resurgence recently in the last few years, but it lacks the pre-9/11 cultural factors (which may not have been aligned with reality after all) that instilled optimism for the future.
