These daguerreotypes of #JohnQuincyAdams provide a striking glimpse of this man. The first and possibly earliest has a small hint of a smile, while the others are solemn and reveal his grave intensity. He was clearly a force to be reckoned with as a congressman.

Portraits of #LouisaCatherineAdams (wife of John Quincy Adams). She was remarkable person in her own right. She took a daring journey from Saint Petersburg Russia to Paris France in February/March 1815, using her savvy and French to survive an encounter with troops loyal to Napoleon.

The Corps of Discovery, commissioned by #ThomasJefferson, assembled in 1804 and set off in 1805 led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. It was to explore the Louisiana Purchase as an expedition from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean and return.

Charles Willson Peale portraits of #JohnAdams and #ThomasJefferson in the 1790s. Both displayed at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. They had a long and complicated association, friendship, bitter rivalry and finally reconciliation, despite fierce political differences.

Gilbert Stuart portraits of #GeorgeWashington and #MarthaWashington.

The #GW painting is known as the Vaughn portrait. It now appears to be a replica as Stuart noted in 1823 that he had rubbed out the original.

#MW sat for her portrait in 1796 at age 65, which Stuart never finished or delivered.

Gilbert Stewart portraits of John Adams and Abigail Smith Adams. Per the National Gallery of Art’s book American Paintings of the Eighteenth Century these are classics of American portraiture.

The Adamses sat for these in 1800 and Stewart did not complete them until 1815.

#JohnAdams was the first Vice President and second President of the United States. As VP he was largely ignored by #GW, despite casting many tie breaking votes in the Senate in support of Washington’s administration.

Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home, is currently being renovated in time for the 250th anniversary of the USA in 2026. You can still get a sense of the grand mansion as you walk around rooms, with tours during the works giving fascinating view of bones of the house #georgewashington #mountvernon
