Evening all! I’m a lecturer in publishing studies at the University of Stirling, as well as the author of a few books for Amber Books. I sort of built what passes for my career by being on Twitter, so I’m sorry to see it go, but needs must.

Was running a bath when I realised I was still 3,000 steps short of my daily total. Chucked my clothes back on, turned off the taps, and dashed round the block twice. Arbitrary targets FTW.

King Street! That was where Parrot Records was too. Only moved away four years ago and I’m already forgetting place names…

I *thought* Andy’s was just outside the Grafton Centre when I remember it, in the mid-nineties, but I could be wrong. An HMV on the market square and another in lion’s Yard, plus Parrot Records round the back near Jesus. Not sure I remember Garon…

Currently, I get in from work at about a quarter to seven, have some food, and then just collapse into a chair until I have enough energy to go to bed. This is sub-optimal.

The fix that FIFA/AFC have put in place to try to ensure Saudi Arabia and Qatar qualify for the world cup would be shocking if it weren’t so utterly, shamelessly predictable and obvious. Corrupt AF.

Just remembered the chump who had a go at me on here last night for buying books online because he didn’t understand that The Bookseller wasn’t Amazon. :-D

Where Patisserie Valerie is now: on Bridge Street. (I’m now wondering if it was a different chain, but that’s certainly where it was.)

Bought this 35 years ago today from Our Price in Cambridge with the record tokens I got from Barclays for opening a student account with them.

35 years of Some Friendly, our debut album released on this day in 1990. What’s your favourite track?

I quite enjoyed the previous two series, but Jim Howick’s character has gone from being sympathetically pathetic to just annoying and this latest episode was 100% concentrated cringe with no fun at all.

Watching episode two of season three of Here We Go and it’s just hideously embarrassing without being funny in the slightest. Not sure I can carry on watching this.

Calling English a 'rip-off degree' is one of the most blatant exhibitions of personal barbarism I've ever seen. You've demonstrated nothing but the poverty of your own mind.

Ha! I thought of you when I heard this.

I have a student who has watched "Younger" (thank god--finally). They're starting a research project on the show's representation of the publishing industry.

Aside from this NYT piece & a 2022 Lit Hub article, do we know other writing looking at this phenomenon?

I’m not sure I’ve ever received a more graceless admission that someone screwed up.

Sorry; *I* wet the bed? You really ought to look at the puddle you’re standing in.

Anyone who follows me on here will know how I spent half my life trawling bookshops, which makes this even funnier.

Imagine quote tweeting someone’s post about a website to try to shame them for buying books online, when they’re actually posting about the website for an industry magazine called The Bookseller. I really can’t imagine how humiliating that would be.

No, it *would* totally be a helpful response, but in this case I tried it and it told me the file was too big to transfer. I appreciate the suggestion, though!
