Fantastic read on the (il)legality of sex testing in sport.

With particular reference to World Athletics & World Boxing’s decision to introduce genetic testing as a precondition for competing in the women’s category 🧬

Fantastic display of solidarity with @chelseapride.bsky.social for the trans+ community at today's Women's FA Cup Final! ❤️💙

We stand by our trans, non-binary and intersex siblings in their time of need. Transphobia has no place in women's football!

If anyone is interested in my email:
Dear ECB,

I was very disappointed to read today that you are barring trans women and girls from playing cricket. Here are the reasons why this is the wrong decision:

1) “Biological sex” is not a binary. As anyone with biology training above GSCE level will be able to explain, there are many aspects which feed into the determination of sex, including physical characteristics, chromosomes, genes, hormones and hormone receptors. Around 1% of all babies are born intersex in some way, and many of those people will never know that e.g. their chromosomes don’t match their external genitalia, or only find out as an adult experiencing fertility issues. The idea that everyone can be clearly split into Male or Female even physiologically, let alone mentally, is biologically ignorant. (I have a PhD in biosciences but frankly this stuff is secondary-school-level biology.)

2) As a (cis) woman who enjoys cricket, I know that, despite being a game played by women in its earliest phase… …I know that, despite being a game played by women in its earliest phase, cricket has had a history of being dominated by men and being hostile to women and minorities. There have been a few noteworthy moments when the cricketing establishment were trailblazers for equality and diversity - the exclusion of the apartheid South African team, for example, or Learie Constantine becoming the first black member of the House of Lords - and in recent years cricket in the UK has made great strides towards inclusivity for women, disabled people, and minority ethnic communities. It is trampling over this good work to now come out with a blanket exclusionary policy.

3) At the grassroots level, many women’s teams have enough trouble trying to field eleven players each week as it is. Reducing the people they can pick from will mean more matches conceded because of a lack of players, and so less cricket available for all women.

4) As to the so-called “risk” posed by “stronger” trans women to cis women players, as mentioned in point 3 many… …players, as mentioned in point 3 many women can’t play in an all-female team anyway because of lack of players. We play against men and boys all the time, otherwise we don’t play at all. To claim otherwise betrays a severe lack of understanding of women’s grassroots cricket. There are also huge variations in the natural and trained abilities of different women - if I faced an England women’s bowler in the nets, they would knock my head off far quicker than any trans woman in the country. Trans women are not a safety risk.

5) There are many advantages to playing a team sport regularly, from benefits to health and fitness, to the social and wellbeing aspect, which I would hope the ECB was aware of. Stripping these benefits from a section of society actively damages those people’s health and wellbeing. Is the aim to kill off all trans people through obesity? It’s irresponsible to deliberately target one group with poor health outcomes, which is the inevitable outcome of sporting bans.

In conclusion, I hope you quickly reconsider the ban you have implemented… …In conclusion, I hope you quickly reconsider the ban you have implemented. It is logically untenable and the only possible excuse for it is bigotry. I like to reflect on the instances where cricket leads the fight against bigotry - I hope you will quickly decided to be on the right side of history.

Regards,

Dr Katy Scott

Saying such practice is not based on scientific evidence, and illegal in countries like Spain.
