So many new followers, I thought I’d do an #aboutme 🧵
I’m Adam, I’m an ‘independent’ historian - which in real terms means no one would give me a full time job - so I now work part time and take care of my kids.
I drive for work which enables me to devour a lot of history podcasts.

I’ve been reading the dramatically entitled Hired to Kill Some Chapters of an Autobiography by John Morris. I was struck by this description of waiting to head to the Western Front as a private before subsequent commission and transfer to the Indian Army:

With a talk on the Indian experience on Gallipoli & the Western Front next month and a chapter to write on Australian/Indian cooperation during the Great War due next year, there is a synergy to the books I’ve taken out of the cupboard this evening!

Being a historian without an office means every so often I have to pull the banana boxes out of the cupboard, find the books I need & put away those I’ve done with.
It’s quite laborious!
But often results in me rediscovering a lot of titles I forgot I owned!

Anybody in the Stevenage area have available an accessible room or studio flat to rent?

My daughter is starting a PhD next week and the flat that we hoped she be in by now looks like it is going to fall through.

Thanks

A quick search throws up a few bits and pieces on prisons and prisoners during the First World War, but not much, if anyone has any suggestions I’d be grateful.

The day job got me thinking about the history of prisons, especially during the Great War. So I thought I’d do some secondary reading
(which also means I’m putting off finishing my 2 upcoming papers)

In fairness the eldest will love it, might have to leave Mrs P and youngest at Eurocamp!

Holiday booked for May next year to Normandy. The poor family don’t realise how much history they are going to be dragged around!

Cecil Allansons Gallipoli Diary originally published in 1916 without much editing so is a good indication of the thoughts of the Commander of 1/6 Gurkhas. If you would like a copy go to goslingpress.co.uk/store/pageid...

On Monday the kids and me spent the day at @natmemarb.bsky.social
They got to do the Stick Man trail, I got to check out lots of memorials that relate to my research.

There is a publisher I used to admire greatly for making good military history affordable. More recently however, a lot of what they are producing lacks quality and more often than not lacks engagement with modern scholarship.

I’m off to a local historical society this evening to talk about warfare in the age of Victoria.
The heat today will nicely replicate the conditions in the Sudan for the audience!

So tomorrow I re-enter the world of full-time work. I’ve loved my two and a half years as a stay at home dad and working part-time but the time has come to try something new.
So tomorrow is my first day with HM Prison and Probation Service!

Thanks to the kids needing paper for drawing, I’ve come across a notebook full of notes relating to research I carried out on enemy aliens in India during #fww, maybe something to come back to at some point.

Thanks Ben, I’ll look him up.
I bought myself Stormcrow, however my wife says I can’t take a hardback on holiday as suitcase space is tight. I’ve had to read it before we go, such a hardship!
Nearly finished, really enjoying it, it’s fantastic!
