Just finished Dennis Lehane's SMALL MERCIES set during the 1970s segregation/busing crisis in Boston. Powerful insights into the mind think of racism and how it becomes generational. Rough justice, and it sounds like Lehane!

If you've considered "borrowing" a story from a "friend" to create a bestseller, look into the fictional THE PLOT and YELLOWFACE for fatal appropriation, and at a recent New Yorker article on "Romantasy" and repeated tropes.

This novel by Elif Shafak has mystery and romance as it follows star-crossed lovers caught up in the Greek/Turkish conflict on Cyprus. A fig tree is an important POV character.
