Makes sense. Some departments specify this in their guidelines.

As someone currently on the TT market, I think it’d useful to include the total duration, as well as possibly the targeted time they should be prepared to speak. I say this because some chalk talks are scheduled to run longer than others

It took me a year to figure out how to format my federal resume correctly. If the federal resume isn’t right it’ll never land in front of the hiring manager. Happy to chat with your student about what I learned to get my first referral. This could also be useful: youtu.be/yA925nKV3QY?...

Currently the model is that you train to do peer review by providing an assist to your PI. Ask your committee members and collaborators to recommend you as a peer reviewed. I don’t think this is the best system, but it is what we have. Perhaps more programs will become available in coming years

Your university may offer courses through the center for teaching and learning. A few members of the JEB and I wrote this editorial on how we think this should be a core part of scientific education: journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/....

I don’t know if any programs available to recent PhDs. If you’re interested in learning about peer review, nature has a free online course that provides a cursory introduction: masterclasses.nature.com/being-an-eff...

I think it’s important to distinguish between the need to compensate peer reviewers and the need to train scientists to be peer reviewers, which ASM is trying to do through initiatives like JEB. While I didn’t get monetary compensation from the experience, I do consider the time well spent and paid
