Happy #ionosphere discovery day everybody!
On this day in 1924, Edward Appleton conducted a neat experiment to prove the existence of a radio-reflecting layer in the Earth's upper atmosphere.
To celebrate, I did a thing. You can watch it here;

Wow.

See that small, moving splotch?

That's 3I/ATLAS, a comet that formed in a different star system, photographed from Mars orbit by the ESA Exomars Trace Gas Orbiter.

Well, you would say that.

Much swearing as my whizzy telescope insisted on a software update as the eclipse ended and clouds rolled in, but I got something!
Full moon with upper right side still in the Earth's shadow as the total lunar eclipse ended. View from Oxfordshire, UK.

When did we stop talking about lunar eclipses and start talking instead about blood moons? Are we now to avoid their scientific wonder in favour of dread-laden hyperbole?

Now laugh at my joke!

I'm looking forward to meeting you!

Blimey. Earthquake caused waves that shook the ionosphere on the edge of space.

Earthquake

The huge M8.8 earthquake at Kamchatka Peninsula last night not only shook the earth. It also generated gravity waves in the atmosphere which echoed around the world, causing the ionosphere to oscillate too.

Amateur DXers around the world have detected variations in the signal strength

Still not sure if that means they liked it or not!

Congratulations Chris, they are lucky to have you! Having crossed paths with you both as a researcher and a science presenter, I can testify that your inclusive and generous approach shines through in everything that you do. Sir Patrick would be proud.

So it might get a bit comety then? @sarahrosewatson.bsky.social can alert observers as to when it will likely encounter fast solar wind streams.
profchrisscott.bsky.social
Genuinely made me laugh out loud
profchrisscott.bsky.social
Whatever. Some might say Stop crying your heart out. D'you know what I mean?
profchrisscott.bsky.social
So wish I could come, but I can't. I hope it all goes well!

When my mum went to see my dad play cricket, she always knew which one was him by looking for the outfielder hidden in a mist of mosquitos and flailing their arms wildly.

The combined DRIIVE and FINESSE workshop has ended at BAS. Two days of fascinating science and planning for future ionospheric campaigns with EISCAT. Great to see brilliant colleagues.

Oh wow. That's *so* cool.

<groan!> It's not just the archaeology that's ancient then!
