The Nationals opposed laws designed to prevent this kind of behaviour, and then blame the government.

From noted expert in international law, Professor Miller.

He’s completely wrong, obviously. The test is ‘effective control’ and it is not necessary to demonstrate control over ever square inch, especially for remote or inhospitable territory.

Plus there is no valid competing claim by the US.

Pleased to see my 2024 Royal Society of NSW Ideas at the House Lecture has now been published in the proceedings of the society.

Looking for a last minute gift for someone who loves Romans? Or loves the law? Or who loves Romans AND the law? Then I recommend Arthur Emmett’s magisterial Roman Law Under the Southern Cross, which I enjoyed reviewing for the forthcoming issue of the Australian Bar Review.

The nation is in trauma but rebooting John Howard’s attacks on multiculturalism won’t work. The country has changed, and our diversity is our strength

Great to meet @orlakelleher.bsky.social, who is visiting @sydney.edu.au from @maynoothuniversity.ie, and hear about her fascinating research on the growing body of climate cases in Ireland.

The Libs, having campaigned against Australia getting the COP, are now even angry that Minister Bowen is in the Presidency
November 20, 2025 at 9:30 PM
In addition a COP in Australia would have been a lightning rod for climate deniers in the Coalition, Advance and News Corp (we can be sure they’d organise a convoy of cookers to Adelaide) which may, perversely, set back the transition. We’ve seen this movie before; in the sequel Hastie plays Tones.

What a clown show. First the Nationals force the Liberals to dump all climate policies, now they say they have gone too far.

Have they really forgotten this pyrrhic victory in 2014?
November 13, 2025 at 4:02 AM
Sorry but you can’t dump carbon neutrality and stay in the Paris Agreement. The Libs need to be pushed on this every day until the next election.

Most of his Coalition colleagues can definitely imagine it and want to make it happen.

A tremendous pleasure to catch up with the Attorney-General, Michelle Rowland, at the Fourteenth International Law Colloquium. The Attorney delivered a great opening address on the colloquium themes of navigating change and building resilience.
