3I/ATLAS, just the third interstellar object detected from earth. Captured from London , 12 hours after its 5 billion year journey towards us from some remote solar system. Now heading back into the void, and will likely never be seen again by any sentient creature

The Ghost of Cassiopeia captured over 6 nights from Bethnal Green. It’s interstellar matter interacting with the middle star from the constellation’s W #astrophotography #astronomy

Galaxy C30 in September 2024 (top) and last night (bottom). A star exploded 40m years ago and its light reached earth 2 weeks ago as supernova SN2025rbs. Taken by me from Bethnal Green #astrophotography #astronomy

Finally (for now) the owl nebula and surfboard galaxy. I chose this target as a tribute to the late great David Lynch (d.2025)

THE OWLS ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM

Revisiting the Whirlpool galaxy - the first I imaged when I started less than 2y ago. M51a is devouring its neighbour M51b.

Distances are huge with galaxies. The photons departed 31 million years ago. The dozen smaller galaxies at the bottom are ~200m light years away

The Orion Nebula and Running Man nebula (the fainter one at the top) aka M42. Captured 19th Dec 2024 from Bethnal Green #astronomy #Astrophotography

Jupiter - the red spot was round the back at the time of capture

Mars - amazingly I was able to resolve some surface detail including the polar ice cap, thanks to its rare position at opposition and perigee

Some highlights from the recent “planetary parade”.

Venus - appearing as a half-circle because it’s always between earth and the sun. Also known as the evening star or, if you’re Tolkien, the light of Eärendil

I was looking forward to talking about #HuntingtonsDisease at this @cellpress.bsky.social symposium on gene & cell therapies in Beijing today. British Airways, with their ailing fleet & zero contingency planning, cancelled my flight after 5h at the gate. Nonetheless I was pleased to present remotely
