Typical European software engineer at a late-stage startup in Berlin, Germany. Originally from Eastern Europe. Opinions are my own.
Tried discussing ideas from a technical book I currently read with my favorite LLM. It was a very nice experience enhancement - like a reading club of one. Wish I would had this during my studies; I might have become a real bookworm.

Funny enough: the list of answers to the question ‘Where did you learn about us?’ from a SaaS offering AI services doesn't still include ‘From my LLM.’ Guys, wake up! 😀 @replicate.com

I have a theory that the popularity of agents can be explained by a “toxic tech lead” phenomenon.

Klarna debited my account the second time today for the same amount as the day before, likely due to the AWS global outage from Monday, 20.11. Unfortunately for me, I went on a bit of a shopping spree last month, so the total repeated debit amount is close to €1000.

The support is predictably poor.

At a time when AI companies' CEOs and founders predict that AI will replace developers very soon, a good strategy for a developer would be to publicly disagree, while still secretly learning to use AI in their own work. This way, a smart engineer will reduce future competition.

Thinking about how to mitigate the priming effect during incident debugging. And is it necessary, in the end, for incidents involving distinct but architecturally similar systems?

This July has been the craziest in a long time. Globally, of course, it was the CrowdStrike incident, but also, personally and at work, I've had numerous issues to deal with. I anticipate August will bring even more chaos, as it's traditionally the wildest month of the year-make sure to be prepared.

Because of all the CrowdStrike noise, I actually missed a more interesting incident when the entire Azure region was partially unavailable for some time on Thursday www.techradar.com/pro/microsof...

Microsoft’s Azure outage is fixed… for the most part

Another positive note is that I received a master's class in debugging production issues from a more senior engineer who was assigned to investigate our service issue from another domain.

I think that in the last few weeks, I experienced my biggest setback this year so far. The critical path service that my team and I are supporting (with me as the de-facto technical lead on the project) had a series of severe incidents, affecting many customers.

Work-life integration sounds like a form of modern slavery.

Love the feature of LLMs, where you can talk in an "immigrant language" with them, and the result is the same as using a good target language. E.g. if you forget some German words, you can simply use the English synonyms in a German text. The LLM will not only understand but answer in perfect German.

I came across an interesting idea that individuals are less likely to experience burnout in fast-paced environments. There is less bureaucracy in such environments because people are too occupied and lack the time to engage in politics. This aligns with my own experience.

Kudos to #Google for effective self-promotion. With all the complaints about its new #AI features, I'm now curious to try using it again for a while.

A truly depressing joke
What's the difference between a lightbulb and a game designer?
A lightbulb stops working once it burns out.

Between a rock and a hard place. Either implement temporary migration logic in the app, thus increasing the code complexity and the likelihood of a bug. Or add another step to the data migration checklist, thus increasing the possibility of mistakes and migration going awry. Never an easy walk.

Hi Bluesky! With Twitter gone, let's see if you'll be a good place to drop thoughts occasionally.
