On Sept 16, we held the 2nd meeting with nesting beach monitors at Santa Catarina do Fogo. We discussed turtle captures, strategies for closing the 2025 season, and shared experiences.

The Project Vitó team went to Santa Filomena after a Cape Verde storm petrel (Hydrobates jabejabe) was found.
The bird was healthy, banded, and safely released.

On Aug 6, the 2nd Environmental Technical Roundtable took place on Fogo Island under the #DestinoFogo project. Led by #ProjectoVitó, key steps were taken for co-managing protected areas on Fogo & Brava — uniting conservation and sustainable development.

From August 5–7, Projecto Vitó joined a regional workshop in Saly, under the RESILAO project by PRCM. The event brought together West African partners to share experiences and strengthen capacities in project development and coastal resilience.

In response to a request from the Guardians of the Sea in Furna (Brava), we met with the Coast Guard and local fishers to discuss licensing, illegal fishing, and better support. Together, we’re building a more sustainable and inclusive approach to managing marine resources.

Turtle Rescue 🐢
This morning, our team rescued a Caretta caretta found trapped in rocks at Cima Islet. After assessment, it was safely released back to the ocean.

Last week in São Filipe, a Boyd’s Shearwater chick and a Bulwer’s Petrel were rescued, cared for, and successfully released back into the wild.

For the first time, we used the AXYRadar to monitor the Cape Verde Shearwater (Calonectris edwardsii) on Brava Island. This tech tracks GPS + vessel radar signals, helping us understand how these endemic seabirds interact with boats, key data for conservation.
