In the UK, I think tone and intonation says more than the word itself. Calling someone a wanker behind their back to a co-worker would be seen as a slight upon their reputation. 'Alright Wanker' to a friend though, totally acceptable. 'Bus Wankers' is popular thanks to a TV show.

The real problem is that the people that read these believe research and cross referencing is 'i Saw iT On yOuTUbe'.
