The name Phoebe is everywhere in Albany, Georgia.

The health care system’s logo and ads are on the sides of high school sports stadiums and on billboards. There are Phoebe golf tees, pens, beach chairs.

2/ Our engagement reporters start by spreading the word about our investigations and getting to know communities.

Sometimes, we get creative. Remember the tip truck we drove around D.C., earlier this year? It led to thousands of tips for our work covering federal agencies!

4/ Hannah’s transplant pharmacist, Adam Cochrane, knew the balancing act was a teeter-totter.

Too much tacrolimus, and the immune system would dip too weak to ward off infection. Too little tacrolimus, and the immune system would tip too strong and attack the transplanted organ.
December 20, 2025 at 1:54 PM
2/ Most people have never heard of tacrolimus. But to anybody who’s received a transplant, like Hannah, the drug is nothing short of a miracle.

Without it, cells in the blood identify a transplanted organ as a foreign invader. That attack can be fatal.
December 20, 2025 at 1:53 PM
Four years after her double lung transplant, 21-year-old Hannah’s body was at war with itself.

“Hurry,” she wrote, unable to speak.

The generic drug she took to prevent organ rejection should have been working. She didn't know the FDA doesn’t always ensure that’s the case. 🧵
