I recently learned the most useful euphemism: guano gala. It means exactly the same thing as the expression you used, and has its own alliteration, but it sounds soooooo much more refined.

People now often label their thing “Americana” to distance themselves from the stuff to which you refer, just as people once called themselves “chemists” to signal that they were an alternative to alchemists.
