Art of Proxy by SpoonyCatt; it features a lilac/lavender-coloured cat with pink braided hair parted to one side. She has a grey spot over her right eye, while also wearing circular-frame glasses. She is posing happily, in a black halter top dress with a spread collar, pockets over the boobs, strap accents on the ribcaghe, and leather straps on the bottom of the dress. She is also wearing a studded black collar, fishnet leggings, and black kneesocks exposing her toebeans. She has one leg stretched out in the air. 8) Dead Mail (2024, dir. Kyle Mcconaghy & Joe DeBoer) - American psychological thriller/horror. toxic synthesizer yaoi. Highly recommend this flick.
4-star review of Dead Mail which reads: "

toxic synthesizer yaoi let's fuckin GOOO

Compelling from start to finish, filled to the brim with a simmering tension that ramps up so well into its climax. Characters feel really well-realized for this kind of movie. The heavy analogue fuzz in the shots alongside really well-done sets make the time this takes place in sing. The synth score is all so excellently done.

A really fun time, would absolutely recommend to friends looking for a slow thriller."

7) The Cell (2000, dir. Tarsem Singh) - American sci-fi psychological horror/crime thriller. Tarsem Singh is incapable of making films without use of lush colours and opulent sets, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
3.5 star review of The Cell that reads:
"

A gorgeous and wild ride, but one that ultimately feels like it's treading a lot of beats that have become commonplace in the characterization of serial killers in the last 25 years. That doesn't stop the ride from being absolutely compelling, though.

This is so interesting to see as a fan of Tarsem Singh's other works visually, as this was his directorial debut. His calculated opulence and eye for flair in framing and set design is striking and makes every single film of his a visual treat, Jennifer Lopez does a great job as the lead Catherine, and I'm shocked to see Vince Vaughn give Peter a solid performance.

I do appreciate the attempt at humanizing a serial killer on display here, and the opulent framing actually lends to its atmosphere. Absolutely something I would've loved to have seen in cinemas."

6) Occult (2009, dir. Koji Shiraishi) - Japanese supernatural mockumentary. I love Shiraishi’s work, y’all, he’s so good at capturing tension and needling it into the audience until it all comes to an explosive head.
Occult, 2009, 4.5 star review Koji Shiraishi has cemented himself as one of my favourite filmmakers in recent years, especially after experiencing his wild ride that was the Senritsu Kaiki franchise last year. He has a knack for making films that truly embrace the found footage medium, often being lower in production values while opting for more grounded filmmaking for the majority of the film. A palpable slow-paced dread fills the air in his films. There's also still a sense of humor on display in his work too, whether it be in the over-the-top nature of the framing or in the ways certain characters act.

All of that is absolutely on display in Occult, and I see where the Senritsu Kaiki films especially get their sillier edge from with this (especially with this film's ending). The general mystique of the film builds up gradually over the course of its runtime, and it very rarely lets go.

Also, Kiyoshi Kurosawa cameo and Masaya Nakahara music? Fuck yeah. This movie kicks
ass.

5) The Empty Man (2020, dir. David Prior) - American mystery/thriller/horror. A film that has some real good craft and a neat puzzlebox, but is a bit long in the tooth and shows its ass on occasion.
3-star review of The Empty Man (2020):

"The Empty Man is a film I wish I didn’t have mixed feelings about. On one hand, it presents a rather compelling mystery and has a Fincher-esque grasp of tension. On the other hand, it’s overly long in the tooth and has some background details I found a little odd in terms of its framing.

The mystery reaches a boiling point in the final act that ends up embracing what I loved the most about the movie: the tension. The rapid cuts that create a disorienting atmosphere. The threads that form a complicated series of knots that form a clear picture by the end. That’s what I love most about the film.

I do find that the process of getting there drags a bit, however. The film clocks in at just over 2 hours & 10 minutes, which while helping with the tension at times can also make some scenes feel superfluous. The opening scene is great for setting up the late-game reveal but also feels long in the tooth for an intro.

On top of that, I found some of the framing to be a little…suspicious. A villainously-framed organization having a clearly-shown survey with talking points such as “menstruation does not prove someone’s gender” and “a woman is just as likely to have a penis as a man” alongside points like “until a civilization has fallen it has not yet served its purpose” and “the scientific method is a tool of oppression” especially doesn’t sit right with me in this current climate. I get that this is supposed to show the methods in which an organization like this can appeal to someone’s sense of self, but the framing feels weirdly deliberately conservative. It feels like it’s equivocating those mindsets when it focuses on them in such a context.

Despite my hangups, though, I thought this film was pretty good! I’d be intrigued to see further horror/thriller works from Prior. Maybe just don’t have weirdly conservative undertones next time."

Had a dream a while back in which I discovered the existence of the "Grave of the Fireflies/Super Mario World 2-in-1" for the Wii. It basically functioned as a DVD except for a "special features" section that literally only had an SNES emulator playing Mario World. It went for absurd prices on eBay
The cover for a fake Wii game consisting of both the 1988 Studio Ghibli film, Grave of the Fireflies, and Super Mario World; both are represented on the cover, the former by the poster of Seita carrying his sister Setsuko across a field and the latter by the artwork of Mario wearing a cape and riding Yoshi. The cover promises "TWO classics in ONE!".

4) Popeye the Slayer Man (2025, dir. Robert Michael Ryan) - American B-movie slasher. Review contains spoilers but I don't care, this movie sucks even after tempering my expectations for it.
1.5 star review of Popeye the Slayer Man reading:
"

First bad movie of the month, and I mean. Come on. Were you expecting something good out of a horror adaptation of a beloved cartoon character that hit the public domain? This might be the first of these I've seen but the cynicism is on full display here.

It's a B-movie slasher teen slasher right out of the aughts. Some of the kills have cool effects, some of the kills look like straight-up garbage. None of the characters feel like they have much of a personality beyond base genre archetypes, and trying shoehorn Popeye's standard characteristics into the slasher framework has always felt silly and ill-fitting from moment one. The film feels like it's aware of this, but not much of its attempts at comedy land for me, either.

This movie does attempt to swing above its weight with Katie and Joey's storyline, with Joey being outright abusive in his jealousy towards her. That jealousy serves as impetus for him and his friends to head to the cannery with the rest of the documentary crew. His selfishness and rage towards Katie make him a target for the Sailor Man, which. Sure. Okay. Catharsis. But this silly slasher adaptation of a cartoon doesn't give this story the weight or focus it deserves, and it comes off worse due to its inclusion.

I love a dumb silly movie, but I wish this had either not focused on Katie's stuff at all or given it the weight it deserves so it doesn't come off as haphazard tonal whiplash."
