In January 2024 I got a one-line email from a woman I didn't know: "Jimmie Duncan an innocent man on death row is looking to get into contact with you."

I've been working on the story ever since. Here it is, finally - a @motherjones.com / @bolts.bsky.social feature: boltsmag.org/the-human-co...
The Human Cost of Jeff Landry’s Drive to Resume Executions - Bolts
Chris Duncan’s death sentence—built on the testimony of two discredited doctors—illustrates just how faulty the system can be.

Since its inception, BRIC has presided over precisely the sort of monitoring & data collection that Trump admin is trying to exploit in its quest to round up immigrants & target politically active non-citizens.

Now, DHS's money comes with even more strings attached.

Bid to Renew Federal Grant Sparks Concern Boston May Help Trump’s DHS on Immigration - Bolts
The grant helps fund a law enforcement center that’s drawn criticism over privacy and over data-sharing with ICE. It would also come with new strings to spend money on border control.

During her mayoral campaign, Wu pledged to abolish the fusion center. After her election, she changed course, even pushing for more $ (story from 2023 linked). Her about-face has maintained the city's dependence on BRIC ... & thus on DHS, which majorly funds the center.

Boston Mayor Backtracks on Ending  Controversial Police Surveillance Center - Bolts
On the campaign trail, Michelle Wu called for eliminating an intelligence center notorious for racial profiling. As mayor, she pushed for more funding.

Boston's Michelle Wu has attracted notice for standing up to Trump on ICE raids. But her stance is undermined by the city's fusion center, which civil liberties advocates have warned abt for yrs: "The whole purpose of it is federal & local law enforcement collaboration."

ICE Air ran an excruciatingly long 50-hour deportation flight on Sept. 11-12, stopping at Guantanamo Bay before deporting people to Mauritania, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, DRC, & Guinea. The plane also stopped in Senegal on the way there and back—likely for fuel—and in Ghana again on the return.

nysfocus.com/2025/09/10/w... stories like this - only 5 claims investigated in 12 yrs! - underscore just how remarkable the New Orleans DA's conviction integrity unit was. It was able to exonerate or resentence 100s of people in just a few years. Then state Republicans essentially shut it down.

IDF sniper from Chicago who says he killed Gazan teenager just for trying to retrieve his brother's corpse: “They’re thinking, ‘Oh I don’t think [I’ll get shot] because I’m wearing civilian clothes and I am not carrying a weapon' and all that, but they were wrong. That’s what you have snipers for.”

I didn't say anything about the quality or independence of al Jazeera's reporting. I posted a link to Mediapart, a French investigative site. What I said is that journalists should not be targeted and killed. Do you agree?
psfrench.bsky.social
Sorry but I'm simply not going to accept "evidence" from the same outlet that framed a big gotcha around starving children having "preexisting conditions" - including starvation-induced diseases like rickets and, literally, a kid who had a brain injury from israeli shelling. totally disqualifying
psfrench.bsky.social
And to be clear, I care about this not bc I think journalists should have special privileges per se - any Gazan civilian killed constitutes a crime - but bc the IDF has deliberately hunted down journalists as part of a concerted strategy to keep the world from seeing the horror unleashed on Gaza!
