Sabetta is now just off Skagen.

Needless to say, it still remains perched off Wales.
HMCG aircraft took a look earlier this afternoon.

Required a *very* hacky approach to replicate for Ireland and we have nowhere near the same density of stations as Finland, so it doesn't look as nice, but hey.

(As with the Finnish data, all normal background levels)

Baltiyskaya Kosa then did the same on 13 March 2025.

Sorokin dipped in and out of the Irish EEZ last year on Feb 8.

It's not unknown or highly unusual - I *think* it's a repeat of what they did last year - data from globalfishingwatch.org

They operated right on the edge of the EEZ in Feb 25, which they're perfectly entitled to do. All fine so long as their AIS stays on & accurate and they stay outside the EEZ.

The three latest arrivals hug the Irish EEZ line as they go north to meet Mironenko and Demidenko.

Playing around in QGIS again - the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK) share their data via opendata.fmi.fi - so you can build a timelapse of radiation readings from their sensor network.

In case you are wondering - all are well within normal background: 0.05 to 0.30 μSv/h :)

Kapitan Demidenko and Aleksandr Mironenko continue to lurk just outside the Irish EEZ and look to be joined shortly by another three Russian fish factory vessels. Additionally, another two may be on the way.

Vessel tracks through the ice off Saint Petersburg in Sentinel 2 and Sentinel 1 - the SAR image almost looks like a ready made heatmap of vessel traffic.

They seem to really like looking at it 📸

To give them the benefit of the doubt, it is a popular spot for trawling at the moment - but that being said, if you wanted to tie up limited surveillance and even more limited enforcement assets....
February 7, 2026 at 12:58 PM
Kapitan Demidenko appears to be operating right on the edge, but outside of, the Irish EEZ - which it is entitled to do: but you can see why the Irish Coast Guard and Air Corps are monitoring their activity - Russian fishing vessels are not permitted to trawl within the Irish EEZ.
February 7, 2026 at 12:49 PM
Irish Air Corps C295 MSA (#285) and Irish Coast Guard B200 (EI-IRF) are both up today - Russian fish factory vessels Kapitan Demidenko, Aleksandr Mironenko & Ester may be getting some attention - they will shortly be joined by Baltiyskaya Kosa & Zakhar Sorokin in the region.

C285 returning from patrol this afternoon - some potential vessels of interest in the area.

Lago Di Como remains off Wales this morning, looks like there'll be a break in the bad conditions at sea over the weekend, before things deteriorate again - guess we'll see if it decides to make a move or not 🤷

After 24+ hours following Akademik Ioffe, HNLMS Johan de Witt has turned away.

Russian flagged and US OFAC sanctioned vessel LADY MARIIA (IMO: 9220641) is circulating off the northern coast of Spain since the 2nd of February.

Left Russia on 14th of January, sat at anchor off France from the 22nd to 31st of January.

No destination currently listed.

Possibly one to watch: US (OFAC) sanctioned vessel SABETTA (IMO: 9347061) is currently sailing from Arkhangelsk with no destination listed.

SABETTA was a regular visitor to the Burevestnik launch facilities at Pankovo, Novaya Zemlya, during its test program in 2025.

HNLMS Johan de Witt currently keeping tabs on Akademik Ioffe as it continues its journey back home to Russia.

Three other Irish Sea frequenters passing each other off Algiers today: Sinegorsk who sheltered very close to UK shores and had to be told to get lost, Lago Di Ledro who lurked off Dublin for days and Stargazer who always says it's going to Turkey, but then goes to Israel instead.
