2. Save lying and cheating only as a last resort and only against those outside the law.
3. Never attack an unarmed foe but may kill one who attacks him.
4. Not harm an innocent.
5. Does not kill or torture for pleasure.

For this reason I propose the heroic alignment in the Palladium style as a an alternate (or parallel, why not multiple Palladium style descriptors per #DnD alignment) lawful neutral:

Heroic characters will...
1. Always keep his word.

or even The Saga of the Volsungs.

The characters of these works believe in and act within strong moral hierarchies that match lawful behaviors but do not embody modern conceptions of good. Achilles is a hero but he is not Aragorn. He isn't evil either, but amoral.

The other gap is lawful neutral. Alexander gives an aside suggesting creating a bureaucratic alignment to fill the slot. I can see the outlines of it but want to suggest an alternative: heroic. Look at the heroes of antiquity in works such as the Illiad, Gilgamesh, The Torah,

Palladium has an alignment I think captures chaotic good better, their Taoist alignment. I suspect Alexander missed it as it only appears in one book to my knowledge, Mystic China for Ninjas and Superspies. This would also allow filling one of the two gaps left.

First, he maps Palladium's scrupulous to chaotic good. In the one true alignment system, five-fold, I'd agree, but in the nine-fold system I think it maps much better to neutral good because of the first item, an insistence on always keeping your word to good people.
