George Paris of Truro, Nova Scotia, as he appeared before facing Joe Grim in 1908. Paris was working as an instructor at the Vancouver Athletic Club at the time of the bout. They fought 15 rounds to a draw at Recreation Park in North Vancouver, where a grandstand was erected for the occasion.

Raymond Downey of Halifax greets local fans after winning 🥉 at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He lost to Park Si-hun in the semis by dubious decision. Park won by worse decision over Roy Jones Jr. for 🥇. These Olympics were grim, marked by corruption, child abuse, internment camps, and mass displacement.

In 1959, Yvon Durelle (dark trunks) of Baie-Sainte-Anne, New Brunswick, took on George Chuvalo for the Canadian heavyweight title. Durelle was 105 fights into his career and gave up 8 years and 24 lbs to Chuvalo. The bigger, younger Chuvalo knocked Durelle down four times and won by stoppage.

News reports from the 1950s rarely told us what boxers made for their efforts. Here is Keith Paris' contract to face Tony Veranis in 1957. Paris was from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

Buddy Daye, a champion in and out of the ring. Few Nova Scotians gave so much to the province. He was a fighter and activist, very involved in the Black United Front and NS Human Rights Commission. He's now memorialized via a street and learning institute. He won the 🇨🇦 title in this 1964 fight.

Wasn't even looking for "cheese champ" and saw this. What the heck is a cheese champ? Someone who is stale maybe? Not testing themselves?

Me, down here at the shore, watching to see how the FIFA boosters in Canada react to the FIFA Peace Prize winner abducting another head of state.

Comic books are such a great way to communicate history. Here's Sam Langford of Weymouth Falls, Nova Scotia, and his struggles with Jack Johnson! In and out of the ring. Published by Sport Thrills in 1951.

Bald guy named Mac is by far the best character in Predator. Not surprising.

There weren't a ton of featherweights around Eastern Canada in the 1960s. Here's Art Hafey (left) of Stellarton and Angus Martin of Baie St. Anne meeting each other for the third time in just over a year. Art won this meeting in Fredericton in 1969, squaring them up at 1-1-1 for the trilogy.

Helping out a documentarian tomorrow re: boxing in history of Pictou County. Here's Percy Paris (right) of New Glasgow meeting former lightweight champ Beau Jack in January 1949. This was in Boston where both guys had just won bouts. (Clipping from the Clarion, 26 Jan 1949)
