The style definitely has parallels to that shown in much of the other exhibit about the Fascists, and was largely in the same time. But they still evoke very different feelings.

The influence was felt for years, and frankly still is. This image here for the Statue of Liberty is from 1986

It clearly was having an influence, but even still the styles that were used by brands or for other purposes were not the same

Two posters for skiing, the first an advertisement for skis themselves, and the second by Waugh for winter sports at the National and State Parks.

The composition is similar in both, but the styles are wildly different, with the advertisement being very classical, and the parks poster in the style the rest of Waugh's work

The first is a railroad advertisement, clearly influenced by Waugh's work, but still bringing in more detail and classic motifs.

The second in the middle is one by Waugh for the National Parks - in particular note the typography of the "NATIONAL PARKS" wording at the bottom that evokes mountains in its style

The third is a more sober, realistic image of what was happening at the time. Waugh's work was specifically meant to be hopeful and want to make people want to visit the parks, especially given the reality of the time

Everything from the use of colors to the image composure to even the typography was so perfectly stylized.

Budget constraints may have been part of the initial reasoning for some of this (tbh some of the best creativity comes from that), but much of it was also bringing in new and modern influences

Before FDR and The New Deal, the only advertisement for the National Parks came from railroad companies to get people to take the train. The imagery was very classical, staid, straightforward.

What Waugh did was entirely different and very modern. These are less than 10 years apart!

The parallels are...not even thinly veiled. History does not repeat but it rhymes, very very closely.

I can't say for sure this exhibit was made specifically for these parallels because I know they can take a lot of time to put together, but it definitely was in mind

The first is "The Future Was Then: The Changing Face of Fascist Italy" which was a lot about the stylings and iconography of the Italian Fascist party and how it wove through the history of the late 19teens when they started to the end of WW2

A FIAT poster during the fascist period of Italy that has been referenced numerous times, probably most notably by the poster for BEN HUR

Poster for cheese that says BEL PAESE, which means 'beatiful country'. There's a quote from Leon Trotsky above that says "Art, it is said, is not a mirror, but a hammer; it does not reflect, it shapes"

In Kyoto, basically straight down the hill from the Yasaka Pagoda. The hotel we stayedat, RC Hotel Kyoto, was a block up from the pagoda and really cool and had amazing views (the pic is from the Juliet balcony in our room)

Checked out a couple exhibits today downtown. The first pic is from the first exhibit which was inspired by Korean folk tales, should have gotten more pics, and the other three are panels from a Keith Haring mural that was along FDR Drive, made in 1984, and has been put back together

The snack game at DisneySea was... alright. The much ballyhooed popcorns and churros really are just kinda meh - super hit or miss, and the missed are stronger than the hits, at least in my opinion.

But this thing here, the mochi Toy Story Aliens - this is fucking god tier snack 🤤
