Anyone else not ready for summer to end? Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited for my first real fall in over twenty years but there’s something about being surrounded by so much life. It insulates you from the chaos of the world and, even if only for a moment, lets you exhale.

President Donald Trump announced his plan in Iowa to have a UFC match at the White House during the kickoff for a year’s worth of festivities to celebrate America’s 250th birthday on July 4, 2026.

A White House spokesperson said they had no details to share beyond the president’s announcement.

The KD trade is terrible, if we are trying to win next season… but I’m okay with it if we are rebuilding. Draft McQueen, Saraf, and whatever we get for Booker. A lineup of Saraf, Green, Dunn, & McQueen could be fun and play with more heart than anything we saw this season.

@jeffgspurs.bsky.social rather than a godfather offer for Giannis, thoughts on drafting Harper & trading Fox, Sochan & salary to PHX for KD? Maybe include #14. I like Harper, Vassell, Castle, KD, & Wemby and think Fox, Booker, Dunn, & Sochan could make sense… thoughts @lockedonsuns.bsky.social ?

He's being disrespectful to veterans in a variety of ways, but the thing that really gets me is Veterans Day started out as "Armistice Day." It was explicitly about peace, never "victory." They were celebrating the fact that the war was over, not that it was won.
Divorced from actual history.

Remember when we spent billions to eliminate disease? Now we spend it to eliminate morals and decency.
this is a staggering amount of money to build camps—suggesting that building & running a gulag will be the primary function of the otherwise gutted Trump-state

A request for proposals for new detention facilities and other services would allow the government to expedite the contracting process and rapidly expand detention.

An important point getting overlooked:

When NIH cancels "diversity" grants (e.g., diversity supplements, Fs, Ks, etc), they aren't canceling the grants based on *what* the grant studies.

They're cancelling them based on *who* is doing the research. And that disallowed "who" is anyone not white.

The GOP’s plan to fix STEM cuts? Rub some dung in the wound to balance the humors and hope for the best.
American academic research is the envy of the world.

Its system of grant making, which is ultra competitive and rigorous, has been emulated by many countries.

And now, as US competitors were doubling down in their STEM investments, we decided that self-inflicted harm was the way forward.

Why study LGBT+ health, climate change, or diversity in science when you can just defund reality? The NIH is leading the way in evidence-based ignorance—because if the research doesn’t exist, neither do the problems!

If we had an offer, my wife and I would seriously consider as I’m sure would many others… the influx of talent spurred massive growth in America after WWII… Deja vu?
What Europe should do RIGHT NOW: Make it extremely easy for US scientists to get long-term visa, create as many additional research jobs in key areas as possible, create new, generous science and research funds. People are losing their jobs over there NOW. Let‘s welcome them.

not paying indirect costs for research is like only paying the players in the Super Bowl.

can't have a Super Bowl without coaches, referees, security, janitors, announcers, stadium staff, and a stadium - and you can't have research without supporting people and facilities

Government should NEVER be run like a corporation.

A corporation is a wealth-concentration engine. It funnels wealth from many to few.

Government is its polar opposite, distributing resources in a way that benefits everyone.

Running government like a business just makes for bad government.

Forcing some of our most talented young people to sit in the back of the bus again is abhorrent…
Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

Research universities are often the largest employers in their region. They are often the primary health care providers to communities. This funding shift will not only reduce US research leadership, it will put working people out of work and reduce healthcare access.
Excellent 🧵 on this evening's NIH announcement of a dramatic reduction in indirect rates for research institutions, which amounts to a generational restructuring of the US research and development ecosystem. These cuts are effective immediately, not just for new grants but for existing ones.
6. The policy does not just affect funding going forward. All existing NIH grants will have their indirect rates cut to 15% as of today, the date of issuance.

For a large university, this creates a sudden and catastrophic shortfall of hundreds of millions of dollars against already budgeted funds.
