Purplemath is a free algebra lessons website. The author, Elizabeth Stapel, always had trouble with math; her lessons show the methods that finally worked for her. Purplemath is where you go when the book and the instructor aren't making any sense.
(BTW, the issue here is that the arc lengths, being the pieces of the circumference of the circle, are measured by a very different formula from that of the perimeter of the square. This method would totally work, though, for the *area* of the circle.)

Because the sun would have been to the north, so the sundial's shadow would have started at the right and then would have swept to the left. "Clockwise" and "anti-clockwise" would be reversed.
